Sumitomo Metal Mining plans to produce 53,200 mt of electrolytic nickel and 22,400 mt of ferronickel in fiscal 2013, which began on Apr. 1, 2013. This compares with actual production of 41,000 mt of electrolytic nickel and 22,200 mt of ferronickel in fiscal 2012.
Sumitomo’s project to increase electrolytic nickel capacity to 65,000 mtpy will be completed in fiscal 2013 but the company will not be able to produce at capacity because intermediate shipments from the Taganito Project will not start until the second half of the fiscal year.
Sumitomo expects its electrolytic nickel production to rise to 30,800 mt in the second half compared to 22,400 mt in the first half. Sumitomo has scheduled maintenance shutdowns at its Hyuga Smelting ferronickel operation at one of two kiln lines for 35 days in May/June and at the other line for 22 days in September.
