[Ferro-alloys.com] Japan’s steel makers continued to export large amounts of pig iron in the first quarter as they had during the second half of 2012. First-quarter exports jumped to 253,566 mt compared to 8,875 mt for the same period a year earlier, according to the customs clearance. Exports slowed slightly in March when they were 58,859 mt (6,262 mt in March 2012) compared to 95,668 mt in February (2,391 mt in February 2012) and 99,039 mt in January (222 mt in January 2012). Exports in the fourth quarter of 2012 were 312,842 mt. First-quarter exports included: China, 121,252 mt (40 mt in the first quarter of 2012); Taiwan, 76,610 mt (zero) and Korea, 52,147 mt (8,051 mt). Japan’s pig iron imports fell 27% in the first quarter to 36,301 mt compared to 49,538 mt in the year-ago quarter. While imports from South Africa rose to 11,017 mt from 5,000 mt, those from Russia plunged to 5,369 mt from 16,614 mt. Other suppliers included, Korea, 15,615 mt, slightly up from 15,467 mt and Brazil, 4,300 mt, up from 3,007 mt. Imports from Taiwan were zero so far this year, as compared to 9,450 mt a year ago.
