[Ferro-Alloys.com] Vale will temporarily halt operations at its Sao Luis and Tubarao and pellet plants so that iron ore production can be reallocated to boost the production of sinter feed.
The decision to reduce the availability of pellet feed stems from the steel industry changing its raw material requirements, Vale said. Pellet use is contracting in favor of greater use of sinter feed, Vale reported.
The Sao Luis plant will close on Oct. 8 and the Tubarao plants will stop production on Nov. 13. In the first half of 2012, these plants produced 4,926,000 mt of pellets and accounted for 18.3% of Vale’s total production.
