The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Tuesday that US raw steel production fell 0.8 percent last week (ended May 26), following a 1.4 percent drop the previous week. The decline was attributed to drops in the Northeastern region (from 294,000 nt to 262,000 nt) and Southern region (from 684,000 nt to 665,000 nt).
Total raw steel production in the United States amounted to 1,961,000 net tons (nt) last week, representing a 0.8 percent reduction from the 1,976,000 nt produced in the previous week, and a 10.3 percent increase from the 1,778,999 nt produced in the same week of last year.
The capacity utilization rate of US raw steelmaking facilities was 79.4 percent in the week ending May 26, compared to 80 percent in the previous week and 72.7 percent in the same week a year ago.
