Western Desert Resources has upgraded the direct shippingore potential of its Roper Bar project in the Northern Territory by more than 250% to 12.9 million tonnes at 54.7% iron.

Combined JORC resource at the project has also increased to 43.3 million tonnes at 42.2% iron from 12.1 million tonnes at 46.1% iron. This represents a 325% increase in contained metallic iron to 12.7 million tonnes.

The revised figures are based on infill resource drilling completed in late 2010-2011 comprising 73 reverse circulation holes for 8271 metres.

This confirmed the hematite mineralization extends and thickens at depth, and more importantly extends to surface.

Western Desert said the increased resource and further definition of DSO grade material contributed towards current and future mine development planning, keeping it on track to start iron ore exports in 2013.

The Roper Bar Iron Ore Province covers about 1,900 square kilometres within eight granted exploration licences in the Northern Territory and includes an estimated 100 square kilometres of outcrop of the target Sherwin Formation which hosts extensive hematite iron ore horizons.

Western Desert had last November signed a memorandum of understanding with Xstrata Zinc to investigate the feasibility of gaining access to Xstrata Zinc’s McArthur River Mine loading facility at Bing Bong on the Gulf of Carpentaria, accelerating Western Deserts plans to ship iron ore from the Roper Bar Iron Ore Project.

Shipping through the established facility would reduce the immediate requirement for investment in new pipeline infrastructure previously proposed as a transport option to Maria Island.

Western Desert would, subject to feasibility and necessary approvals, build an access road of 160 kilometres from the Roper Bar project area to Bing Bong. (Source: Proactive Investors)
