China produced 51.75 million metric tons (tonnes) of crude steel in October, up 44.2 percent from last October's 35.9 million tonnes, according to the latest data from the International Iron and Steel Association.

In October, total crude steel output in 66 countries hit 112 million tonnes, 13.1 percent more than last year's 99.2 million tonnes. The association attributed the overall upward trend to the surge in China's economy.

Total output of crude steel of other countries, except China, stood at 60.43 million tonnes in October, down 3.72 percent on a year ago.

Market observers forecast global crude steel output to reach 1.2 billion tonnes in 2009, while last year saw 1.33 billion tonnes in total.

Compared with last October, Japan's crude steel output dropped by 12.9 percent in this October, the European Union fell by 12.1 percent, the United States fell by 12.4 percent, and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) grew by 26.9 percent.

In January to October, the global crude steel output totaled 982.14 million tonnes, down 13.5 percent year on year, which was smaller than the 16.4-percent year-on-year drop in January to September.
