Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd has completed the acquisition of a ferro chrome plant from Tata Steel Limited in Kalinganagar, Odisha. The transaction, valued at Rs 707.26 crore including base consideration, GST and net working capital, has been funded entirely through internal accruals.

The acquired facility spans 115 acres and houses four furnaces with a combined production capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum. Capacity is expected to rise to 150,000 tonnes per annum once a partially built fifth furnace is commissioned within the next year.

Expanding capacity in a key industrial hub

Kalinganagar has emerged as a strategic metals and manufacturing cluster in eastern India. By integrating the new plant into its operations, IMFA is strengthening its footprint in Odisha while enhancing its scale in the ferro chrome value chain.

The company, established in 1961, operates as a fully integrated producer of value added ferro chrome, with captive power generation and mining linkages. The latest acquisition complements its ongoing greenfield expansion plans, positioning the company to cater to rising domestic and export demand from the stainless steel sector.

According to Managing Director Subhrakant Panda, the deal marks a milestone in IMFA’s growth journey. The focus now shifts to ensuring a seamless integration process aimed at unlocking operational synergies and improving efficiency across assets.

Strengthening global competitiveness

Ferro chrome is a critical raw material in stainless steel manufacturing, and scale remains central to cost competitiveness. With the addition of the Kalinganagar unit, IMFA is set to become India’s largest ferro chrome producer and among the leading players globally.

The expansion comes at a time when infrastructure growth, construction activity and industrial manufacturing are driving demand for stainless steel products. By increasing production capacity and optimising operations, IMFA aims to reinforce its role in the global ferro alloys supply chain.

The acquisition underlines a clear strategy of consolidation, scale enhancement and long term value creation in India’s ferro chrome industry.
