The Smederevo steel plant in Serbia, once on the verge of closure, was revitalized by a 2016 partnership between China's HBIS Group and the Serbian government under the Belt and Road Initiative.

 

Within six months, the plant turned profitable after seven years of losses. From 2018, it was Serbia's top exporter for four consecutive years, retaining 5,000 employees and renewing hope for thousands of families.

 

Zhang Jianfeng, Assistant Director of Marketing Department, TangSteel Company, HBIS Group, said after the new sintering plant was put into operation, the local people asked "Why is there no smoke coming out of the chimney?" The reason is, we have new facilities, which is more environmental friendly. The new sintering plant and new reheating furnace are put into operation and running well, the environmental protection level and energy utilization effciency of HBIS Serbia are significantly improved. In the future, I will pass on more advanced service concepts and product structure optimization experience of HBIS Group to HBIS Serbia, making new contributions to the friendship between China and Serbia.
