Indian private-sector producer Tata Steel registered its highest crude steel production of 19.9mn t and sales of 18.9mn t during the April 2022-March 2023 period.
Output from Indian operations was higher by 4.3pc against the previous year on the back of debottlenecking across sites and ramp up of Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited at Kalinganagar in Odisha, the company said. Crude steel output in January to March rose by 5.1pc on the year to 5.15mn t.
Deliveries rose by 3.3pc on the year despite a volatile operating environment during the financial year, Tata said, adding its domestic deliveries rose by 10pc on the year. The Indian government had imposed a 15pc export tax on several steel products in May-November last year. Its deliveries rose by 1pc on the year to 5.2mn t during January-March.
Tata Steel's domestic deliveries for automotive and special products rose by 5pc on the year to 2.7mn t during 2022-23. Branded product and retail segment sales increased by 11pc on the year to 5.9mn t and industrial product and project deliveries climbed by 14pc on the year to 7.2mn t in 2022-23, the company said.
Tata subsidiary Tata Steel Long Products' direct reduced iron (DRI) output in April-March dropped by 12pc on the year to 737,000t, while sales during the period declined by 16pc against the previous year to 497,000t as one of the two units has been operating as a conversion unit for Tata Steel from the end of November 2022, it said.
Tata Steel Long Products' crude steel output during the period increased by 33pc on the year to 910,000t, while saleable steel sales rose by 26pc to 822,000t on new output from NINL. NINL's crude steel production stood at 202,000t and saleable steel was at 167,000t in October 2022-March 2023.
NINL began operations on October 2022, within three months of completion of acquisition, and has steadily ramped up during the last two quarters, with current run rate of crude steel and pig iron around 1mn t on annualised basis, the company said. argusmedia.com
