Steelmaker Nucor rolled its first plate at its new mill in Brandenburg, Kentucky.
The new 1.2mn short tons (st)/yr plate mill rolled its first steel plate on 30 December, the company said today.
Final commissioning at Brandenburg will take place in the first quarter, which is also when the mill will ship its first tons to customers.
Many in the US plate market expect the startup of Brandenburg to lead to further price pressures on plate, as the mill looks to fill its new order books and more supply is added to a market that right now has relatively short lead times at 3-4 weeks.
The Argus US plate ex-work assessment fell by 20pc in 2022 to $1,455/st.
