Slovakia-based US Steel Kosice idled blast furnace two at its Slovakian site on 4 September for a 60-day stoppage, and will continue to adjust its maintenance schedules in line with customer demand, the company has told Argus.
Rumours have been circulating since June that the company would idle a blast furnace, but the company had consistently denied these suggestions.
The confirmation follows a spate of idlings announced by European market leader ArcelorMittal towards the end of last week. ArcelorMittal has taken more than 7mn t/yr of crude steel capacity off line, including blast furnace two at its Dunkirk site in France in the middle of this year, according to Argus calculations.
Hungarian producer Dunaferr has idled a 550,000 t/yr blast furnace in recent weeks, in response to rising costs, while fellow Visegrad-based producer Liberty Ostrava idled blast furnace 2 at the end of July, leaving it with one operational furnace. And HBIS Serbia idled blast furnace one at the beginning of July, as reported by Argus — the unit has pig iron capacity of around 900,000 t/yr.
