Commercial Metals (CMC) is creating a line of net-zero greenhouse gas emission rebar products, which it claims will remain carbon neutral from production to final delivery, covering scopes 1-3 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard.
New rebar produced by electric arc furnaces (EAF) cuts 63pc of emissions compared with industry averages, CMC said, adding that it will use renewable energy credits (RECs) to create RebarZero with 100pc net-zero carbon electricity.
Unlike carbon offsets, RECs represent attributes of 1MWh of reneweable energy generation, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.
Along with its new rebar product, CMC offers carbon-neutral rebar, wire rod and t-post.
CMC recycles and manufactures steel and metal products at its facilities in the US and in Poland.
