【Ferro-alloys.com】US Steel has added two more blast furnaces to its maintenance list for the coming months. US Steel is planning outages at two of its Midwest facilities in the fourth quarter of 2021. Granite City Works in Illinois will stop production at blast furnace B on October 1 for 7 days for reliability cantered maintenance. In addition, US Steel will temporarily close its largest blast furnace at the Gary Works in Indiana on November 30 for 10 days. The company previously announced a planned 10-day outage at its Big River Steel Arkansas plant in October.

Blast furnace BF-B at Granite City mill has a rated annual capacity of 1.4 million short tons per year. The other blast furnace at the mill, Blast furnace A, is indefinitely idled.

Blast furnace No 14 at the Gary Works has a rated annual capacity of 2.8 million short ton per year. Work on BF14 would start after the planned November 9 return of the BF 6 furnace of 1.36 million short tonne capacity from 38 day outage.

US Steel's Big River Steel mill in northeast Arkansas will take its compact strip production slab caster, continuous pickle line and in-line tandem cold mill, and galvanizing line down from 10-23 October

The outages come on top of others over the next four months and could continue to crimp supply in US. Integrated steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs will take down its 4.63 million short ton per year blast furnace No 7 at its Indiana Harbor mill for 45 days beginning on 1 September. Electric arc furnace steelmaker Nucor will take down its 1.6 million short ton per year Gallatin flat-rolled mill for at least three weeks beginning in late-November.
