[Ferro-alloys.com] ArcelorMittal Brasil announced that rolling mill 3 at the Monlevade unit will start operating in January 2022. The start of activities is motivated by market demand and the prospects for economic growth. In all, the resources destined for rolling mill 3 total BRL 580 million, considering the investments to implement the equipment and the disbursements for its activation. The equipment has the capacity to produce 1 million tonnes per year of steel, however, production will take place gradually and in line with market demand. Rollers 1 and 2 will continue the development of special steels at the unit, which currently has an installed capacity of 1.2 million tons of steel per year.
For the operation of rolling mill 3, built in 2015, ArcelorMittal was waiting for improvements in market conditions. The aim of the laminator is to guarantee full customer service. The strong demand for steel, especially in the advance of civil construction, and the economic indicators made the mill's operation possible.
ArcelorMittal Monlevade is an integrated plant in the Long Products segment of ArcelorMittal and operates mainly in the steel market for the manufacture of wire rod for special applications, such as springs, various cables, hoses for oil extraction, strands for prestressed concrete, wires for agricultural applications, steel wool and wool, fasteners in general, strands for tire manufacturing, welding wires, household appliances and others. The unit is located in the city of João Monlevade, 110 km from the capital Belo Horizonte, in Vale do Aço in Minas Gerais.
