Assmang sold 483,000 mt of chrome ore in the second half of 2012, up 129% from 211,000 mt in the same 2011 period, while charge chrome sales fell 44% to 48,000 mt from 86,000 mt during the same period. The company converted or plans to convert all but one charge chrome furnace at Machadodorp to high-carbon ferromanganese. In the second half of 2012, the chrome division lost ZAR21,503,000 on revenues of ZAR969,972,000 vs. a loss of ZAR9,706,000 on revenues of ZAR962,441,000 in the same 2011 period.
