[Ferro-Alloys.com] UMK’s manganese mine in the Kalahari is operating at expectations. The mine, which has a capacity of 2.5-million mtpy, has been operating at an annualized rate of 3.6-million mtpy in recent months. The company is expected to make a decision on whether to build a 400,000-mtpy sinter plant by the end of the year. However, the betting is against the facility since there really isn’t a premium for sintered ore over high-grade lumpy material.

Besides, Nucor Steel has created Nucor Ferro Alloy Group, headed by Alberto Nava, formerly of Arkansas Steel. The new organization will assist the buyers from each Nucor mill as well as sourcing ferroalloys for the mills and DJJ, which it then hopes to resell. Nava is expected to move to Pittsburgh.
