[Ferro-Alloys.com] Evraz Stratcor will begin processing roasted vanadium-bearing slag at its Hot Springs, AR, plant in November 2012.

Evraz previously announced that it had launched the project (Ryan’s Notes, Sept. 3, p2) without giving details. The company said that the slag will come from Evraz’s steelmaking operations. Evraz has vanadium bearing iron ore in Russia and South Africa, and sources outside the company expect the roasted slag to be shipped to the US from Russia. Evraz has approved spending USD7-million to construct new facilities at Hot Springs to allow greater use of steelmaking slag in the future. This also will enable the plant to resume historic production levels of 9-million ppy of V2O5.

Currently, the Arkansas plant processes various vanadium-bearing feedstocks including residues, ashes and spent catalysts. In recent years, sources said, the fly ash shipments from Venezuela have not been reliable, and this is what prompted Evraz to seek alternative feedstock. The Hot Springs plant produces specialty vanadium products used by the titanium, chemical and steel industries.
