The analysis results of import and export customs clearance in the respective countries clearly show that Chinese low-priced ferro-silicon (roundabout products) without regular export procedures distributed in the Asian ferroalloy market in the period from January to March in 2015 was down from the prior period.

With regard to ferro-silicon (Si>55%) the respective countries of Japan, South Korea and Taiwan imported in the period from January to March, the only ratio the roundabout products comprised of the import in South Korea was up from the prior period (from October to December in 2014) and the ones in Japan and Taiwan were down ditto.

The decreased ratio of roundabout products in Taiwan was mainly due to the announcement made by the major blast furnace mill in Taiwan around last May that it emphasized compliance behavior and would purchase only ferro-silicon exported with regular export procedures, and the ratio of the roundabout products shows a declining trend.

As the ratio of roundabout products in Japan was reduced from the prior period but was up from the year-earlier period, many of market participants have got impression that the distributed volume of roundabout products was up from the prior period. The reason for the above is because the low-priced products have been shipped from the ports in the mainland China without going through the third country like Vietnam.

For a reference, the shipment of ferro-silicon of Malaysian origin started from last November, and as of the period from January to March in 2015, such import results were recorded as 680 tons in Japan and 1,406 tons in Taiwan. At the present moment, Malaysian ferro-silicon whose production ratio is high is the product with Si being 72%, and most of ferro-silicon used in Taiwan contain 72% silicon which matches up with the compliance behavior emphasized by the major steel mill as aforementioned, which is steadily increasing the share in Taiwan.

The difference among import volumes of ferro-silicon by respective countries in Asia including Japan and the export volume by China is as shown in Table 1. The share and volume of roundabout products calculated based on the foreign trade statistics of China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are as shown in Table 2. For a reference, the imported volumes and shares by main source in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are as shown in Tables 3, 4 & 5.
